Gear to start your photography business

Wacom Tablets: I have been using a Wacom Intuos for close to 20 years now (So yes even before I started my wedding photography business) and I wouldn’t be able to do any of my fine  retouching without one. They do take some time to get used to but once you do you never go back to a traditional mouse.

Canon Cameras and Lens: I have been a Canon user from day one of my career and although I have tried some other camera systems Canon just felt best for me. Below is a list of all the canon gear I bring to my shoots Canon EOS 5DS Digital SLR (Body Only)

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Fixed Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM Lens

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens for Canon EF Cameras

Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Ultra Wide Tilt-Shift Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens

Profoto Lighting:  In my option Profoto is the highest quality on location lighting you can buy. It’s just that simple. Thought I own a few pieces of their gear this light weight kit is great for the wedding photography business. Profoto B2 250 AirTTL location kit

Yongnuo Wireless ETTL Triggers: Oaky by this point you might be thinking “Steve do you use any equipment that isn’t top of the line “?  The answer is, yes and here is a great example.  I can’t say enough great things about this little gadget. My history with wireless triggers hasn’t been good.  I have had a million problems when it come to wireless tigger systems . They where so untrustworthy and expensive that I almost stopped using them completely because I felt like I was just trowing my money away. My luck changed went I happened upon a blog that was talking about these little cheap gizmos that worked really well so I decided to give them a try. I started off with the Yongnuo Rf-602’s a few year back purely on the fact that it retails for under 25 bucks. I figured it was worth the gamble! To my surprise they worked better then the systems I was paying $250.00 plus for. I quickly became a fan of the brand and am now using the Yongnuo YN-622C Wireless ETTL Flash Trigger Receiver Transmitter Transceiver. I couldn’t be happier, they are affordably priced and work incredibly well. Highly recommend.

Photo Mechanic: I can’t tell you how much of a time saver this program has been for me. When I first stared shooting in RAW I was importing an entire shoot of images into Lightroom and waiting what felt like days for the program to render previews. The culling process would take hours upon hours of painful waiting time as the program slowly displayed images. Lightroom just wasn’t built for that type of work and  because of that it was taking huge chucks of time out of my work day.  I need to find a solutions and came across Photo Mechanic. Simply stated program renders previews amazingly quickly so you can see whats worth keeping and thats not in minutes not hours.  This program is a must for any studio big or small.

Credit card processing

Square:  We love the flexibility and low price point of this service. We are a small company that doesn’t do a ton of credit card swipe per month so it didn’t make senses for us to have be paying monthly fees like brink and mortar business. Square fit us perfectly by offering swipes on mobil devices and online selling options as well.
